Crafting these sensational smashed potatoes begins with selecting the right core ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in achieving the desired texture and gourmet flavor profile:
For the Smashed Potatoes:
- Baby Potatoes: The undisputed foundation of this dish. For best results, choose small, waxy varieties such as new potatoes, Yukon Golds, or small red potatoes. These types have a lower starch content, which allows them to retain their shape beautifully when boiled and smashed, ensuring a wonderfully tender interior while still developing those coveted crispy edges. Avoid floury potatoes like Russets, as they tend to become too mushy and fall apart. Don’t worry if a few bits crumble during the smashing process – these smaller fragments will crisp up even more, adding an extra layer of delightful crunch.
- Olive Oil (for frying): A good quality olive oil, specifically not extra virgin, is perfect for shallow frying. Non-extra virgin olive oil has a higher smoke point, making it suitable for heating to a shimmering temperature without burning or developing bitter notes. A generous glug is key here, as it provides the necessary medium for achieving that irresistible golden-brown crust and intensely crispy exterior.
- Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper: These fundamental seasonings are crucial for flavoring the potatoes from the inside out during boiling and enhancing their taste after smashing. Don’t be shy with the salt in the boiling water – it’s the initial infusion of flavor.
For the Zesty Chive Crème Fraîche:
- Full-Fat Crème Fraîche: This rich, subtly tangy, and delightfully sour cream is the creamy heart of our topping. Its luxurious texture and delicate acidity provide a perfect counterpoint to the salty smoked salmon and the crispy potatoes. Opting for full-fat crème fraîche ensures the best consistency and a truly indulgent flavor.
- Fresh Chives: Finely chopped chives introduce a mild, delicate onion flavor and a beautiful splash of vibrant green to the crème fraîche. They offer a subtle aromatic lift that enhances the overall taste without overpowering the other premium ingredients.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: A vital component for brightening and balancing the entire dish. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice adds a refreshing zest that cuts through the richness of the salmon and crème fraîche, bringing all the flavors into a harmonious balance. Adjust the amount to achieve your preferred level of tanginess.
For the Luxurious Toppings (Optional, yet Highly Recommended for a Gourmet Touch):
- Smoked Salmon: Thinly sliced or elegantly curled smoked salmon introduces a wonderful salty, subtly smoky, and rich flavor. It instantly elevates these smashed potatoes to a sophisticated appetizer. The quality and type of smoked salmon can significantly impact the taste, so choose a variety you genuinely enjoy.
- Caviar (or Roe): For the ultimate touch of decadence and an unforgettable presentation, a small spoonful of salty, buttery caviar is unparalleled. Its unique burst of briny flavor and delicate texture adds an exquisite layer of luxury. If traditional caviar is beyond your budget, excellent and more affordable alternatives include vibrant **salmon roe** (larger, orange eggs with a lovely pop) or **lumpfish caviar** (smaller, typically black, and widely available), both of which offer similar briny notes and visual appeal.
- Quick Pickled Red Onion: These thinly sliced, sweet-and-sour onions provide a brilliant acidic contrast to the richness of the crème fraîche and salmon. Their vivid color and sharp, tangy flavor offer a fantastic textural and taste counterpoint, preventing the dish from being too heavy.
Creative Substitutions & Delightful Variations for Your Smashed Potatoes
One of the most appealing aspects of this smashed potato recipe is its incredible flexibility. Don’t hesitate to experiment with these suggestions to tailor the dish to your personal taste, dietary needs, or whatever ingredients you happen to have on hand:
- Alternative Aromatic Garnishes: While fresh chives offer a classic touch, you can easily swap them for other thinly sliced aromatics. Consider **spring onions** (scallions) for a slightly stronger, yet still subtle, onion flavor and a pleasant crunch. Alternatively, explore different **fresh herbs** such as finely chopped dill, flat-leaf parsley, or even a hint of tarragon to introduce unique aromatic notes and a burst of color.
- Tangy Pickled Alternatives: The quick pickled red onion provides a fantastic zesty element. If you’re looking for a change, try thinly sliced **pickled beetroot** for an earthy sweetness and a stunning crimson hue. For an extra flavorful kick with a fermented tang, I’ve personally enjoyed using products like superbeet kimchi from Vadasz.
- Smoked Fish Alternatives: Smoked salmon is a classic for a reason, but the world of smoked fish offers exciting possibilities. **Smoked trout** provides a milder, perhaps earthier, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully. For a sophisticated Scandinavian twist, delicate curls of homemade or store-bought **gravadlax** (cured salmon) are an excellent choice. My own beetroot cured salmon gravadlax works exceptionally well and adds an artistic touch.
- Budget-Friendly & Diverse Roe Options: While true sturgeon caviar is a luxurious indulgence, many excellent alternatives can still deliver on flavor and visual appeal without breaking the bank. **Salmon roe** (larger, vibrant orange eggs with a satisfying pop) or **lumpfish caviar** (smaller, often black, and very affordable) are fantastic choices that provide that characteristic briny burst and gourmet look.
- Add a Salty Tang with Capers: For an extra layer of briny, salty, and tangy flavor, sprinkle a few drained **capers** over your finished smashed potatoes. Their sharp taste provides a wonderful counterpoint to the creamy crème fraîche and rich smoked salmon.
- Introduce a Hint of Spice: If you enjoy a touch of heat, a tiny pinch of **chilli flakes** sprinkled over the top, or even a dash of your favorite hot sauce mixed into the crème fraîche, can add an exciting kick that awakens the palate.
- Make it Vegetarian or Vegan: This recipe is incredibly adaptable for various dietary needs. To create a straightforward **vegetarian** version, simply omit the smoked salmon and caviar. For a completely **vegan-friendly** option, utilize a high-quality plant-based crème fraîche alternative (many excellent oat or cashew-based options exist) and explore the extensive list of plant-based topping ideas provided in the “Incredible Topping Ideas” section further down the post.

Top Cooking Tips for Extra Crispy Smashed Potatoes Every Time
Mastering the art of perfectly crispy and flavorful smashed potatoes is easier than you think with a few clever tricks up your sleeve. Follow these expert tips for consistently excellent results:
- Choosing the Best Potatoes: Always opt for small, waxy potato varieties like new potatoes, Yukon Golds, or small red potatoes. Their lower starch content means they maintain their shape better after boiling and smashing, ensuring a tender, creamy interior and a robust, crispy exterior. Avoid large, floury potatoes, which tend to become too crumbly.
- Salt Your Boiling Water Generously: Potatoes absorb a significant amount of flavor during the boiling process. Make sure your boiling water is generously salted – it should taste like the sea! This is the first and most fundamental step in seasoning your potatoes from the inside out.
- The “Steam Dry” Secret Weapon: After draining your boiled potatoes, spread them out on a baking sheet and allow them to steam dry for several minutes. Any residual moisture is the enemy of crispiness. This step ensures a drier surface, which is crucial for achieving that coveted golden-brown, crunchy crust during frying or roasting.
- Smash with Purpose: Use a firm but gentle hand when flattening your potatoes with a measuring cup or glass. Aim to create a relatively uniform disc, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick, to maximize the surface area for browning. Don’t worry about perfect shapes; the irregular edges are what get extra crispy!
- Use Enough Oil for Frying (But Not Too Much): While you’re not deep frying, a “generous glug” of olive oil (avoiding extra virgin for its lower smoke point) is essential for that golden crust. The potatoes should be coated and frying, not just lightly greased. Ensure the oil is shimmering hot before adding the potatoes to the pan.
- Never Overcrowd the Pan: This is a golden rule for crispiness! Fry the smashed potatoes in batches if necessary. Overcrowding the pan dramatically lowers the oil temperature, leading to steamed, soggy potatoes rather than crispy ones. Give each potato enough space to brown evenly.
- Flavoring the Potatoes Themselves: Beyond the basic salt and pepper, you can infuse your potatoes with incredible flavor both before and after cooking:
- During Boiling: Add aromatic elements like bay leaves, fresh rosemary sprigs, or a couple of lightly crushed garlic cloves to the boiling water. The potatoes will gently absorb these flavors as they cook.
- After Smashing (Before Frying/Roasting): Sprinkle your smashed potatoes with a pinch of smoked paprika for a warm, smoky depth, a touch of chili flakes for a subtle kick, or a generous dash of dried mixed herbs for an aromatic layer. For a truly unique twist, dust them with curry powder to create a delightful “Bombay smashed potato” vibe, perfect for serving with Indian-inspired toppings or cooling dips like raita.
- Serving Temperature Flexibility: While these smashed potatoes are undeniably best served warm and fresh from the pan, they are also surprisingly delicious served at room temperature. Their crispness holds remarkably well, making them an excellent option for party buffets where continuous reheating isn’t feasible, much like gourmet potato crisps.
- Optimal Storage and Reheating: If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. To reheat and revive their crispiness, spread them out on a baking sheet and pop them into a hot oven (200°C/400°F) for 10-15 minutes, or use an air fryer, until they are heated through and deliciously crispy once more.
Oven-Roasted Smashed Potatoes: An Alternative Method for a Crowd
While shallow frying excels at delivering unparalleled crispiness and is quicker for smaller batches, roasting smashed potatoes in the oven offers a fantastic, more hands-off approach, particularly when you’re preparing for a larger gathering. This method provides a slightly different, yet equally delicious, texture – perhaps a bit less intensely crisp on individual fragments, but still wonderfully golden-brown and satisfyingly crunchy overall. It’s an excellent choice for batch cooking, freeing up your stovetop for other dishes.
- Preheat Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 200°C (180°C Fan / 400°F). Ensuring the oven is fully preheated before introducing the potatoes is crucial for even cooking and achieving that desired crispiness.
- Prepare & Season: Follow the initial steps of the recipe: boil the potatoes until tender, drain them, and then smash them flat (refer to steps one and two of the frying method). Once smashed, transfer the potatoes to a large roasting tin or a sturdy baking sheet, ensuring they are in a single layer. Drizzle them generously with olive oil – enough to lightly coat each potato, which is essential for promoting browning and crispiness during roasting.
- Flavor Boost: Season the potatoes liberally with salt and freshly ground black pepper. This is also an excellent opportunity to infuse additional flavors: sprinkle with dried mixed herbs, fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs, or a generous dash of smoked paprika for an added aromatic or smoky dimension. Gently toss the potatoes to ensure they are evenly coated with the oil and seasonings.
- Roast to Golden Perfection: Place the roasting tin in your preheated oven and roast for approximately 35-45 minutes. The precise cooking time will vary depending on the size and thickness of your smashed potatoes and your oven’s efficiency, so keep a watchful eye. You’re aiming for them to turn a glorious golden-brown and become wonderfully crisp on the edges. For even browning, it’s a good idea to flip them halfway through the roasting time.
- Serve with Desired Toppings: Once perfectly roasted, remove the potatoes from the oven and proceed with the recipe by adding your creamy crème fraîche and any of your chosen gourmet toppings.
This oven method is a true game-changer for entertaining, as you can spread out all the potatoes on one or two baking sheets and let the oven do the heavy lifting, giving you more time to interact with your guests or focus on other elements of your meal.
Beyond the Classic: Incredible Topping Ideas for Smashed Potatoes
The true magic of smashed potatoes lies in their incredible versatility, serving as a robust and flavorful base for almost any topping you can imagine. While the classic combination of crème fraîche, smoked salmon, and caviar is undeniably superb, don’t limit your creativity! Here are some of my favorite topping inspirations, designed to cater to various tastes and dietary preferences, allowing you to create a unique culinary experience every time:
- Elegant Roast Beef & Horseradish Cream: For a sophisticated, savory bite, prepare a simple horseradish cream by mixing sour cream (or crème fraîche) with prepared horseradish, a hint of Dijon mustard, and a pinch of salt. Dollop a small amount onto each crispy smashed potato, then adorn with a delicately folded slice of rare roast beef and a tiny sprig of fresh dill or chives for garnish.
- Earthy Beetroot, Goat Cheese & Thyme (Vegetarian/Adaptable Vegan): This vibrant and earthy combination is a vegetarian’s dream. Top your golden potatoes with chunks of roasted or tangy pickled beetroot, crumbled soft goat’s cheese, and a sprinkle of fresh thyme leaves. To make it entirely vegan-friendly, simply substitute the goat’s cheese with a plant-based soft cheese or a creamy cashew-based “ricotta.”
- Warm Brie & Tangy Cranberry: A perfect choice for the festive season or a cozy gathering. Place a small, creamy slice of brie cheese on each smashed potato, followed by a spoonful of sweet and tangy cranberry sauce. Briefly pop them under a hot grill (broiler) or use a kitchen blowtorch until the brie is beautifully melted and gooey. A tiny sprig of fresh rosemary adds a delightful aromatic touch.
- Sweet & Savory Chutney & Melted Cheese: Another irresistible cheesy option that hits all the right notes! Top each potato with a slice of your favorite mature cheddar or brie, a generous dollop of rich caramelized onion chutney, and a few fresh thyme leaves. Melt under the grill or with a blowtorch until the cheese is bubbling, golden, and perfectly gooey. The combination of sweet chutney and savory cheese is simply divine.
- Crispy Bacon & Zesty Cream Cheese: A universally loved flavor pairing that delivers ultimate comfort. Crumble crispy, salty, and smoky bacon generously over a dollop of creamy plain or herbed cream cheese on each smashed potato. Finish with a sprinkle of thinly sliced fresh spring onions (scallions) for a pleasant crunch and mild onion flavor.
- Classic Prawn Cocktail with a Twist: For a delightful retro-chic appetizer, start by preparing a creamy avocado smash (simply mashed avocado seasoned with a squeeze of lime or lemon juice, salt, and pepper). In a separate bowl, mix cooked, peeled prawns with a classic Marie Rose sauce (or a lighter, yogurt-based cocktail sauce for a healthier option). Spoon a small amount of the avocado onto each potato, then top with the luscious prawn cocktail mixture. A dusting of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper and a final squeeze of lemon juice complete this refreshing and flavorful bite.
- Mediterranean Inspired: Transport your taste buds to the Mediterranean! Top your smashed potatoes with a spoonful of sun-dried tomato pesto, crumbled feta cheese, and fresh basil leaves. Alternatively, try a dollop of creamy hummus, a few pitted Kalamata olives, and a drizzle of high-quality extra virgin olive oil.
- Spicy Mexican Fiesta: For those who love a bit of heat and vibrant flavors, create a Mexican-inspired topping. Add a dollop of fresh guacamole, a spoonful of zesty salsa, a sprinkle of cotija cheese (or crumbled feta as a substitute), and a dash of your favorite hot sauce. Finish with fresh cilantro for an authentic touch.
Frequently Asked Questions About Smashed Potatoes
At their core, smashed potatoes are delightfully simple, typically consisting of just baby potatoes, olive oil, and basic seasonings like salt and freshly ground black pepper. However, their true magic lies in the unique preparation method that sets them apart from other potato dishes. Unlike classic mashed potatoes, which are known for their creamy and smooth texture, smashed potatoes are celebrated for their dramatic textural contrast: an intensely crispy, golden-brown exterior and a tender, fluffy interior. The process involves boiling small, waxy potatoes until they are fork-tender, then physically “smashing” them flat to create maximum surface area. This flattened surface is then either shallow-fried or oven-roasted until it achieves an incredible crispiness. This method is distinct from the uniform, buttery consistency of mashed potatoes, the shredded texture of hash browns, or the consistent bite of roasted potatoes. Their versatility also allows for endless flavor infusions; you can add a pinch of smoked paprika for smoky smashed potatoes, chili flakes for a hint of spice, finely chopped rosemary or thyme for herby notes, or even curry powder for a “Bombay” twist, perfectly pairing with various toppings and dips like guacamole or raita.
While their names might sound similar, mashed potatoes and smashed potatoes are fundamentally distinct in both their texture and preparation. **Mashed potatoes (or mash)** are traditionally made by boiling potatoes until very tender, then mashing them thoroughly with rich ingredients like butter, milk or cream, and seasonings until they achieve a smooth, creamy, and often fluffy consistency. The primary goal is a uniformly soft and comforting texture. In stark contrast, **smashed potatoes** emphasize a delightful textural juxtaposition. Small, waxy potatoes are boiled until tender, then intentionally flattened (smashed) to create irregular edges and a large, uneven surface area. These flattened potatoes are then crisped by frying or roasting until they develop an incredibly crunchy, golden-brown crust, while retaining a soft and fluffy interior. Essentially, mashed potatoes aim for luxurious smoothness and creaminess, whereas smashed potatoes celebrate extreme crispiness and a satisfying crunch alongside a tender core. Both are incredibly delicious in their own right but offer entirely different and enjoyable potato experiences!
Absolutely, making smashed potatoes ahead of time is a brilliant strategy for effortless entertaining or busy weeknights! You can complete the initial stages of the recipe, specifically boiling and smashing the potatoes (up to the end of step 4 in our instructions), well in advance. After smashing, it’s crucial to let them steam dry thoroughly and cool completely at room temperature. Once cool, you can either cover the baking sheet (if you plan to cook them soon) or transfer them to an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator overnight. When you’re ready to serve, simply take them out of the fridge and proceed directly to the shallow frying or roasting step until they are gloriously crisp and golden. This pre-preparation significantly cuts down on last-minute cooking time, allowing you to relax and enjoy your guests or focus on other meal components. Just remember, the final crisping step should always be done just before serving to ensure the best possible texture and warmth.
For the absolute best smashed potatoes, your choice of potato is key! You’ll want to select small, waxy varieties. These types have a lower starch content and a firmer flesh, which allows them to hold their shape beautifully after boiling and smashing without becoming overly mushy. This ensures you achieve that desirable tender interior while simultaneously developing a fantastic crispy exterior. Ideal choices include baby new potatoes, small Yukon Golds, red potatoes, or fingerling potatoes. Their skins are also generally thinner and crisp up wonderfully. It’s best to steer clear of large, floury potatoes like Russets or Idaho potatoes, as they tend to absorb too much water during boiling and can fall apart excessively when smashed, making it difficult to achieve the perfect balance of crispness and tenderness.
Keeping smashed potatoes wonderfully crispy, especially when preparing a large batch for guests, is a common concern. If you are shallow frying them in batches, a great tip is to transfer the cooked and drained smashed potatoes to a baking sheet lined with paper towels and keep them warm in a very low oven (around 100°C / 200°F). This gentle warmth will help maintain their crispiness without continuing to cook them or causing them to become soggy. Alternatively, if you’ve chosen the oven-roasting method, you can also keep them warm in a low oven until ready to serve. However, it’s important to remember that smashed potatoes are surprisingly delicious served at room temperature, much like gourmet potato crisps! If you’re comfortable with them not being piping hot, simply arrange them on a wire rack after cooking (rather than stacking them) to allow air circulation and prevent condensation, which is the main culprit for soggy potatoes. This method helps maintain their delightful crunch until serving time.

Ingredients
For the smashed potatoes:
- 750 g baby potatoes
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Olive oil, for frying (not extra virgin, save that for dressings etc)
For the chive crème fraîche:
- 150 ml full-fat crème fraîche
- 1 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
- Lemon juice, to taste
To serve: (optional, but highly recommended)
- Smoked salmon, cut into small slices or elegant curls
- Quick pickled red onion
- Caviar (or salmon roe, lumpfish caviar)
- Fresh chives, extra for garnish, chopped
- Lemon juice, a final squeeze, to taste
Instructions
-
1. Prepare Your Workspace: Line a large baking sheet with non-stick baking paper and set it aside. This will be used for drying and smashing the potatoes.
-
2. Boil the Potatoes: Place the baby potatoes into a large saucepan. Add a generous pinch of salt (the water should taste like the sea!) and fill with cold water until the potatoes are covered by about an inch. Bring to a rolling boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender all the way through but not mushy. The exact time will depend on the size of your potatoes. Once cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander and immediately transfer them back to the empty, hot saucepan or onto your prepared baking sheet to allow them to steam dry for a couple of minutes. This is crucial for crispiness.
-
3. Make the Chive Crème Fraîche: While the potatoes are cooking, prepare your flavorful crème fraîche. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the full-fat crème fraîche with the finely chopped chives and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Mix everything well until thoroughly combined. Taste the mixture and adjust the lemon juice to your preference for a perfect balance of tang. Cover the bowl and chill in the fridge until ready to use.
-
4. Smash and Season: Once the potatoes have steamed dry, arrange them in a single, even layer on the lined baking sheet. Using the base of a measuring cup, a sturdy mug, or a small glass, firmly press down on each potato to flatten it into a disc, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Don’t worry if some bits break off; these fragments will become incredibly crispy. Season both sides generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
-
5. Prepare for Frying: Line a separate clean baking sheet or a large plate with several layers of paper towels. This will be used to drain off any excess oil from the fried potatoes, ensuring maximum crispness. Set aside.
-
6. Heat the Oil: In a large, non-stick frying pan with relatively high sides (to minimize splatter), pour a generous glug of olive oil (enough to coat the bottom and reach about 1/4 inch deep). Place the pan over medium heat and allow the oil to heat until it is shimmering. You’re aiming for a shallow fry, not a deep fry, but enough oil to properly crisp the potatoes.
-
7. Fry to Golden Perfection: Carefully slide as many smashed potatoes as you can fit into the hot oil in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for approximately 5-7 minutes on the first side, or until they develop a beautiful golden-brown crust. Using a thin spatula or palette knife, carefully flip each potato and continue to shallow fry on the other side for another 5-7 minutes, until both sides are wonderfully crispy and golden. Remove the cooked potatoes from the pan with a spatula and transfer them to the paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain any excess oil. Repeat this process with the remaining smashed potatoes, adding more oil if needed.
-
8. Assemble Your Canapés: Artfully arrange the warm, crispy smashed potatoes onto a serving platter. Take your chilled chive crème fraîche: either spoon a generous dollop onto the center of each potato or, for a more refined look, pipe it on using a piping bag. Next, delicately place a small slice or elegant curl of smoked salmon on top of the crème fraîche. Follow this with a small spoonful of quick pickled red onions. For that extra touch of luxury, add a small spoonful of caviar (or your chosen roe).
-
9. Final Garnish and Serve: Finish your exquisite smashed potato canapés with a sprinkle of freshly snipped chives, a twist of freshly ground black pepper, and an optional final squeeze of fresh lemon juice to enhance all the vibrant flavors. Serve these delightful bites immediately and watch them disappear!
Recipe Notes & Expert Tips
Make Ahead for Easy Entertaining: This recipe is perfect for partial make-ahead preparation. You can boil and smash the potatoes (up to the end of instruction step 4) the day before. After smashing, allow them to steam dry and cool completely, then cover and refrigerate overnight. When ready to serve, simply proceed with frying or roasting them until crisp. This greatly reduces last-minute cooking stress.
Keeping Smashed Potatoes Warm: If you’re shallow frying in batches, and want to keep them warm for serving, transfer the cooked, drained smashed potatoes to a baking sheet lined with paper towels and place them in a low oven (around 100°C / 200°F). However, don’t underestimate their deliciousness at room temperature – they hold their crispness wonderfully, much like premium potato crisps!
Roasted Smashed Potatoes Option: For a slightly less hands-on approach or when cooking for a larger group, you can bake these instead of frying. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C Fan / 400°F). After boiling, draining, and smashing, spread the potatoes in a single layer on a roasting tin, drizzle generously with olive oil, and season with salt, pepper, and any desired herbs/spices. Roast for about 40 minutes, flipping halfway, until gloriously golden and crisp.
Vegetarian and Vegan Adaptations: To make these smashed potatoes vegetarian, simply omit the smoked salmon and caviar. For a full **vegan-friendly** option, use a plant-based crème fraîche substitute and choose from the many delicious plant-based topping ideas suggested in the “Incredible Topping Ideas” section of this post.
Customize with Your Own Toppings: The toppings provided in this recipe are merely a guide to inspire you. Feel empowered to experiment with your favorite flavors and ingredients (refer to our comprehensive “Incredible Topping Ideas” section for further inspiration!). Alternatively, these perfectly seasoned and crispy smashed potatoes are fantastic served plain as a versatile side dish for almost any main course.
Serving Size Suggestion: When planning these as canapés or appetizers for a party, a good rule of thumb is to allow 2-3 smashed potatoes per person. This will help you determine the total quantity needed more accurately than relying solely on potato weight.
